Most Akita dogs aren’t that keen on getting wet. Perhaps it has to do with their dense coat. One time Kensho fell in a pond by accident and it took nearly 24 hours for him to dry.
But Kensho does like to get in the water up to knee height (like we do when it’s cold [...]

My Akita Kensho has his passions. If I had to deduct his priorities from his behavior I would say this is his top 3:
Play with bitches, preferably when they are in heat
Digging
Tracking and hunting
In a dog whisperer workshop I have learned to never ever take away the passion of a dog. You’ll risk [...]

Today we drove all the way to Holten. A small town in the Netherlands with beautiful surroundings. But it wasn’t for the lovely weather this day, the heathery hills or the green trees that we went on this trip. It was to meet Kensho’s family again. Just like last year we had planned a true [...]

A short cartoon clip about the life of the famous Japanese dog Hachiko, who returned to Shibuya Station in Tokyo for nine years after the death of his master.

From the 1987 film “Hachiko Monogatari” (aka Hachi-ko). Wonderful movie that tells the true story of an Akita’s devotion to his master.
You’ve got to see this! So beautiful, and yet… so sad.
Chu-ken Hachiko (lit. the faithful dog Hachiko) was born in Akita in 1923 and was first brought to Tokyo in 1924. He and his [...]

Today I found this amazing gallery of an Akita fan: Pekingin-Ankka’s deviantART gallery.
She draws and shapes different kinds of material into Akita’s. Mostly drawings and plushies but you can even get an Akita tail to accompany you best suit or see marzipan Akita candy.
It’s very clear that this Finnish girl, Terella Tanskanen, just [...]

The Akita belongs to group 5 ‘Spitz and primitive types’ according to the FCI classification of dog breeds.
Physically spitz breeds are very close to the wolf ancestors of dogs. Take a wolf and curl its tail and you have a grey Malamute or a Siberian Husky. Paint it red like a fox and you get [...]

Kensho has a brother ‘Daigo’ and recently that brother has got company. A new Akita joined the family. A female one of course since you would just be asking for trouble when you try to stuff two male Akita’s into one small house (or two females for that matter). His new girlfriend’s name is Rona. It’s a strange weather lately. One second the sun is shining, the other it’s snowing and the streets turn white.
Usually we arrange a date for Kensho and Joy so they can play together. Today was an unexpected surprise to meet Kensho’s best female friend. He’s not very monogamous but this Husky is his number one [...]

The Akita was designated as a Natural Monument in July of 1931 by satisfying the criteria of “a domesticated animal unique to Japan”. Soon other Japanese dog breeds followed.

Hokkaido
Kai
Kishu
Shikoku
Shiba Inu

On June 1, 1999, the FCI decided to divide the Akita into two separate ‘breeds’ worldwide.
One breed is the Japanese Akita (formerly known as ‘Akita Inu’).
The other breed is the American Akita (formerly known as ‘Great Japanese Dog’ or GJD).
The GJD consists of Akitas originally exported after WWII whose features were grossly altered by [...]

The history of the Japanese Akita dog shows many ups and downs.
The Akita’s ancestors were dogs used by matagi for hunting. These dogs, usually called matagi inu, were not as large as modern Akita dogs. Many of these dogs were used as guard dogs. Many were used to guard the emperor and his children. [...]

When it’s still cold and a bit of sunshine finds it way, then Kensho is the first one to notice. Snowdogs do love sunbathing as long as their temperature is not getting too hot.
At this time of the year (February in Western Europe) there is not much sun and Kensho exactly knows how to seize [...]

Akita Kensho meets his number #1 lady friend Joy, and joyful it certainly is.
I can shoot some great pictures whilst Kensho is enjoying himself.
Not too long ago Joy has been spayed and she has recovered just fine. On the third picture she has Kensho’s ear between her teeth.
Every once in a while they both take [...]
