Exercise is very important in a dog – dog owner relationship. Being your dog’s owner by law or by payment does not mean your dog will acknowledge that fact. You have to deserve being the alpha, the guy or woman in charge!

According to Cesar Millan, the “Dog Whisperer”, you should maintain a healthy relationship with your dear Akita via this formula: 50% physical exercise, 25% discipline and 25% affection. Exercise, including playing with your dog, establishes and confirms your and his position every time.
In order to be able to enjoy exercising your Akita and take him out often for long walks, he (or she!) should learn to behave well on the lead. This also implies YOU should learn how to use the leash well. Too many dogs are just being dragged around on a leash. Think about elephants or horses being taught tricks. By no means a man can force an elephant to do something he doesn’t want. There is no aggression or force involved. Only gentle instructions and motivational rewards, and a lot of patience.

Remember this when you train your puppy. No matter how small the animal to be trained: don’t use force! It will damage your relationship and work counterproductive. If you feel the urge to do so, then bang your head to the nearest tree and start over.

Teaching an Akita, or any dog for that matter, to walk gently besides you on a leash requires patience too. From my own experience with Kensho I can tell you it requires a lot of patience… but it really pays off!

When my Akita was about 9 months old he would pull the leash to make me go faster. Of course I would not let him have his success. So every time he pulled the leash, I would just stop. And I would wait…. and wait… and wait until he stopped pulling. Only then I continued walking. This way I could take 30 minutes to walk 50 meters. So then I changed my method. Every time Kensho would pull the leash I would walk in the other direction. This must have looked very strange to people on the street but this worked. Kensho noticed he did not succeed when he kept pulling the leash. And every time he walked besides me on a loose leash, I would praise him heavily. Good dog!

Another method I used was substituting his dog collar for a halti. A halti looks like a muzzle but your dog can still bark, bite, eat, drink and lick. A halti can work miracles but only when you use this tool correctly. You can NEVER apply any pressure for this can cause severe neck injury. My experience is that because a halti looks like a muzzle, people would assume I was walking an aggressive Akita. Since I cannot control people’s thoughts I just continued using the halti until Kensho was ready to walk with his regular dog collar again. He’s a fast learner so we could make the switch within a couple of weeks.

Back using the dog collar he sometimes relapsed and then 5 minutes with the Halti (which was always in my pocket at that time) he remembered the lessons and behaved like a very nicely educated Akita again.

You can search the internet looking to buy a halti online or you can ask for it at the nearest pet shop.

Do you have an Akita or are you thinking about getting one? Then continue reading.

The basis is communication!!

A good dog training method will teach YOU how to understand your dog’s language and how you can communicate in such a way that HE will understand YOU.

Almost every day I see people that just keep on repeating commands or even worse… raise their voice and repeat the command over and over again. But if their dog simply hasn’t learned the command this approach is never going to work. It will only frustrate both parties.

The key ingredient is to learn how you can get your dog to learn new things. And this may surprise you: repetition is NOT key!!! Especially with an Akita, and in this respect they do differ from other dog breeds.

Akita’s can be quite stubborn. It can seem they get personally offended when you ask them to do things ten times in a row, when they have perfectly demonstrated the first two times that they understand the command and are willing to obey you. So just don’t push it! Would you repeatedly do the same stupid thing? Like sit – go – fetch – sit – lay down – sit … come on. Give the Akita brain some credit and respect .

Get into that doggy brain and learn how to motivate your Akita into learning new things. That way it is much more fun for him and much more fun for you. Double fun !!!

Fact #1
In the majority of cases, it’s the owners that need training, not the dog. Discover the secrets to being the greatest dog owner!

Fact #2
You should never use the “Come” command to call your dog to discipline him. Find out why!

Learn to improve the bond between you and your furry buddy. I see two possibilities for improving the communication between the two of you.

Teach your dog the basics of human language.

Learn about your dog’s behavior and look at things from his point of view.

I give you the best chances when you choose the second option.

It’s much easier that way!

The book starts out with an introduction, followed by the history and evolution of the dog as a domesticated pet. Canine intelligence and trainability are discussed, as are the various breeds and how they rank in these topics according to top canine experts. The ‘Starting a Family’ section tells it all in photographs: how mates are selected, the mating sequence, pregnancy, delivery and birth, and finally how puppies develop and view the world as they grow.

The following sections, ‘What Dogs Do’, ‘Being A Dog’ and ‘Living With Us’ cover a variety of topics that will interest dog owners. Learn about:

Social order – more complicated than simply top dog and everyone else

The differences between male and female behavior and the effects of neutering on behavior

Territory – marking it and defending it

Seeking attention, happiness, excitement and boredom behaviors

Meeting humans and other animals

Normal dog behaviors associated with eating, chewing on things, vision, voice, sense of smell

And many more topics!

Do you insist on trying things the other way around?
Be my guest… I have found just the book for you!

The book’s first sentences are as follows: ” Do you want a dog with whom you can have a light conversation over coffee? Or perhaps, during a quiet evening meal, you’d enjoy an in-depth debate on American foreign policy? Though you can certainly commune with your best friend now, you still lack the exciting give-and-take of a profound discussion of some arcane topic. Without the proper training, it’s just not going to happen! Hey, even with the proper training you’re not going to get that in-depth conversation. When you converse with your dog in a relaxed fashion, even if you’re dead wrong, he’ll still look at you with adoring eyes. This unquestioning adoration is the communication you’ll receive from him.”

Ah…. I just discovered this third option: Get a translation device …

This BOW lingual device was developed by a Japanese scientist and it translates dog emotions.

You need to enter your dog’s breed and gender (it is pre-programmed for over 80 breeds). Bow-Lingual even includes a special set-up for mixed-breeds. Everything you need to interpret your dog’s bark is in the box.

Bow-Lingual divides barks into six categories of emotion: happy, sad, frustrated, on-guard/territorial, assertive/showing-off and needy. The wireless microphone attaches to your dog’s collar, and sends the message to the handheld receiver unit where the bark is analyzed. There is even a ‘Home Alone’ mode that lets owners see if their dog has been barking and how he was feeling when they were away. The Bow-Lingual records all barks over a 12 hour period!

He says “they just kill us”. He thinks Japanese Akita’s are three times more dangerous than a pit bull. He wants them all out. Next time he sees a Japanese Akita, any Japanese Akita, he’s going to kill it.

The victim was working on a job in a home in Auckland, New Zealand. The dog was the very loved family house dog of his clients. Just hours after the attack Dog Control Officers were on the scene. The owners said their dog had never attacked before. It was handed over to authorities. The Akita was brought to death row for dogs and was destroyed less than 24 hours later. The decision to whether or not the owners will be prosecuted is still being decided.

All dogs are capable of biting. All dogs can launch an attack. There is no evidence that Japanese Akita’s are more violent than any other breed. Experts say you can’t single out just one dog breed as the new public enemy number one. This resembles the nature-nurture debate. Dog’s behavior, is just like ours, not fully controlled by the genes.

A predisposition to behave in a certain way is only a small part of the equation. The environment has a bigger impact as to whether or not the aggression is going to surface or not.

The triangle: dog breed, the individual dog and dog training/the owner is what’s important. A dog that has had negative experiences with people is more likely to develop a fear of people which can result in unprovoked bite incidents.

Don’t stare a dog right in the eyes. Imagine a human stranger doing this to you. How would you feel? When a dog gives a warning, then accept the warning. Socialized dogs will give light warnings first, then stronger and stronger and only if you can’t take any hint then the dog would have to escalate the warning further.

When we as humans are the superior breed, then act superior. Learn doggy language as they cannot learn ours. Education is very important. Up to 75% of dog bites are actually by the victim’s own dog.

You can’t decide a whole breed is aggressive because of a biting incident with an individual dog. If so… then what conclusions can be drawn about the human race after reading some random newspaper headlines?

The bond between dogs and humans is based in part on trust, and part of that is eroded once you are bitten. If the victim is a bystander and not a dog owner, he is likely to be lost forever to any relationship with dogs and may become hostile to them. Hostility coupled with activism can sound the death knell of a breed.

John Payne, President of New Zealand Institute of Animal Control Officers, only today heard for the first time of a Japanese Akita attacking and he’s 21 years on the job. In order for a breed to be designated as a dangerous dog breed they need to be disproportionally featured in dog attacks and there aren’t really any dog breeds that fit into that sort of category.

For instance, German Shepherds account for a large number of bite incidents, but that’s just because there are a lot of German Shepherds around. Before jumping to conclusions you have to know how to interpret quantitative data.

Scientist are examining aggressive genes in dogs. Swabbing that dog and analyze it’s gene profile can help predicting whether a dog that has never been aggressive in the past is likely to be aggressive in the future. Then what? Are we going to allow these dogs to be destroyed whilst they haven’t done a thing wrong so far? Like in the pre-crime unit in the movie ‘Minority Report’? Within 24 hours, without a jury?

The truth of the matter is, all dogs can be provoked or egged on to bite. Aggression is of course part of the dog psyche (as it is also part of the human psyche); young dogs, particularly males, do frequently test the dominance status of higher-ranking males. There’s no such thing as a ‘bad’ breed. Practically all kinds of dogs are trainable. Proper training and socialization can make otherwise violent dogs, such as pit bull terriers and Rottweilers, adorable and gentle ones.

Dog owners should have their beloved pets trained to follow basic commands like come, sit, lie and stay. Obedience training school is one way of effectively preventing many dog-biting incidents, but you should try to find time for day-to-day instruction between dog and master, as well. This helps build the bond between you and your dog; when your dog trusts you enough, he dare not attack other people, particularly YOU.

When it comes to Akita training, you probably already know that it can sometimes be difficult to train your Akita dog. This is simply because the Akita dog is a highly intelligent, fearless and spontaneous animal. These of course are wonderful characteristics, but can lead to making training you’re Akita rather difficult.

For starters, Akita’s are very protective of their owners and family. While this means undying loyalty to you and you’re family, it also means that they have a strong tendency to be rather aggressive and hot tempered towards any “unknown” visitors. This characteristic is the most difficult personality trait that needs to be trained when it comes to Akita training. Of course with the proper knowledge of Akita training, this shouldn’t pose to be too much trouble.

Akita dogs are also very intelligent animals, and it is for this very reason that they may often times think they “know better”, and try to take their own path…even towards their own training. However this means that if you have the proper knowledge of how to train you’re Akita dog, then they will learn very quickly and with ease.

Akita’s have a strong tendency to NOT get along with other pets, but this trait can be somewhat cured. Because Akita’s are very dominate and territorial animals, they’re not very big fans of sharing space with other animals.

Want proof? See this picture of my Akita and my 14-year old cat.

From the moment you bring you’re Akita home to the days that you’re Akita is resting underneath the shade, it is crucial that they know who their master is at all times, otherwise it is very likely that they will run all over you. A timid or submissive owner is not recommended for this breed, they’re strong will can over power you.

It also must be noted, that while Akita’s do get along very well with children that they already know within the family, they have a tendency to not tolerate new children that are brought into the family.

Now all these traits should not put you off owning an Akita dog. Yes, Akita training can provide the owner with some challenges, but the rewards are very well worth it. It is also important to note that while this breed might have its difficulties, these are traits that can be drastically settled down, but require the proper specialized knowledge to do so.

At seven weeks of age Kensho already mastered the SIT command. I’m using a nonverbal command using my right hand and not my voice. It’s very convenient to teach a puppy this SIT command at an early stage. This way I can get Kensho to sit down before crossing the street or tell him to quiet down when my attention is somewhere else (like paying for groceries).

First you must learn your Akita puppy the new command indoors. The idea is that there is less distraction in the house.

When your Akita puppy understands the link between the command and his behavior (dogs learn by association) you can move outdoors and practice the SIT command in quiet areas. Only when your pup has full understanding of this command you move on to the third phase which is to practice the SIT command outdoors in areas with distractions (like playing children).
