The posts about Akita aggression draw a lot of attention on this blog.

I’m glad though that many people post comments about their experiences with Akita’s that convince that these dogs are great pets (or can be after training). You do need to know what you’re dealing with. Don’t buy an Akita in an impulse.

To show that these indeed are great pets once properly trained and raised (and remember.. when you don’t have the energy or time to raise an Akita to be a well trained house pet than please get yourself a gold fish ).

I’m asking everyone that reads this blog and has raised an Akita to share their experiences. You can leave comments or register as a guest blogger to post an article. Don’t be shy. We can all learn from your experiences and it’s always a joy to read funny or heartwarming stories too.

I just stumbled upon this great YouTube movie that shows an Akita and a Husky playing with two children.
The Akita looks like a giant fluffy dinosaur compared to these kids, but he is o so sweet.

Wonderful movie that tells the true story of an Akita’s devotion to his master.

You’ve got to see this! So beautiful, and yet… so sad.

Chu-ken Hachiko (lit. the faithful dog Hachiko) was born in Akita in 1923 and was first brought to Tokyo in 1924. He and his owner, Mr. Eisaburo Uyeno, were inseparable friends right from the start. Each day ‘Hachi’ would accompany Eisaburo, a professor at the Imperial University, to the train station when he left for work. Upon returning, the professor would find the dog patiently waiting, tail wagging. This happy routine continued until one fateful day in 1925, when the professor was taken ill on the job and unfortunately died before he could return home.

Despite the fact that Hachiko was less than two years old at the time, the bond between dog and owner was strong. Hachiko continued to wait each day at Shibuya station for a friend who was never coming back. At times, he wouldn’t return home for days at a stretch.

The Akita became a familiar sight to commuters as he kept his vigil for over ten years. On March 8, 1935, Hachiko finally went to meet his master. He died on the very same spot he last saw his friend alive.

Kino’s Journey: the Beautiful World (キノの旅 -the Beautiful World-, Kino no Tabi -the Beautiful World), shortened to Kino’s Journey, is a Japanese light novel series written by Keiichi Sigsawa, with illustrations by Kohaku Kuroboshi. The series was published in 2000 and since a Playstation version and animated movie have been produced.

The main protagonist in the series, Kino travels to different countries with her talking motorrad Hermes, discovering their cultures and people. In the anime (Japanese animation), Kino’s gender is ambiguous in the beginning, but is later confirmed to be female in the episode “Land of Adults”. Her original name is hinted to be that of a flower in the Land of Adults, and Kino is a name she adopts after meeting Hermes.

The character ‘Riku’ is an Akita dog.

This talking Akita dog travels with Shizu. He is large, white, and always smiles! (as Akitas do )

Apparently, Riku has only spoken to Hermes, as Kino does not believe Riku can speak when told about the discussion Hermes had with him. (In the Japanese dub, Riku also speaks to Shizu, but in the English dub, only barks or whimpers to him in these instances.) In the novel Riku speaks to both Kino and Hermes.Kino travels through a mystical world of many different countries and forests, each unique in its customs and people. She spends only three days and two nights in every town, without exception, on the principle that three days is enough time to learn almost everything important about a place, while leaving time to explore new lands. Kino says in The Land of Visible Pain that this principle is probably a lie, specifically noting “if I stay any longer, I’m afraid I will settle down.”

The “beautiful world” Kino travels through almost always has its dark side. Often the countries Kino visits are places where the populace is oppressed, where a tragedy has occurred, or where the culture has become extremely strange because the rulers or people sought to do what they believed was right.

A phrase repeated in the anime and novels is “the world is not beautiful, therefore it is” (世界は美しくなんかない。そしてそれ故に美しい。, Sekai wa utsukushiku nanka nai. Soshite sore yueni utsukushii.) symbolizes how the dark aspects of life, such as oppression and tyranny, make the good and happy parts of life all the more precious and wonderful.

Sorry, no sign of Riku in this introduction sample of the movie.

Silver Fang (1986), a 21-episode anime series, is based on a manga of the same name in 1984 created by Yoshihiro Takahaski. He was reportedly inspired by a news article which told of hunting dogs that had been abandoned by their masters and had begun living as wild animals…

This Japanese anime tells the story of an Akita Inu pup called Gin (Japanese for ‘silver’) who leaves his master, a young boy named Daisuke, to join a pack of wild dogs. The pack is gathering strong dogs from all over Japan to fight a deranged bear named Akakabuto and his minions.

The story begins from the point of view of the humans, but swings to the dogs with episode 7 of the anime. It is in that episode that the audience hears the dogs communicating with each other through speech, though it continues to be barks and whines to human ears.

This anime has become extremely popular in the Nordic countries (Finland, Denmark and Sweden) and has been dubbed in multiple other countries.
