Sometimes I get the question where to find a reputable Japanese Akita breeder. Earlier I published a list of Akita kennels in the Netherlands. You can find others by doing a search in Google or start from this website.

Select about three breeders in your area and visit them – personally! Get to know them and have a look at their dogs. Don’t go buy an Akita in an impulse or choose this breed just because they look so cute.

Choose wisely.

Choose an Akita breeder wisely as you’ll be likely asking them for guidance and advice in the future. Make sure the breeder of your choice is paying attention to socialization of the Akita pups before they leave their mother and siblings.

At seven weeks of age Kensho already mastered the SIT command. I’m using a nonverbal command using my right hand and not my voice. It’s very convenient to teach a puppy this SIT command at an early stage. This way I can get Kensho to sit down before crossing the street or tell him to quiet down when my attention is somewhere else (like paying for groceries).

First you must learn your Akita puppy the new command indoors. The idea is that there is less distraction in the house.

When your Akita puppy understands the link between the command and his behavior (dogs learn by association) you can move outdoors and practice the SIT command in quiet areas. Only when your pup has full understanding of this command you move on to the third phase which is to practice the SIT command outdoors in areas with distractions (like playing children).

Today is the day I get to take my Akita puppy ‘Kensho’ home.
It’s a long drive but Kensho just falls asleep. When we stop for a break I take him outside and he does a little peeing.

When we arrive at home I lock my cat ‘Tommie’ in a separate room. This way Kensho can explore his new surroundings first.

The Akita puppies are now 7 weeks old. Current scientific knowledge dictates this is the best time for a puppy to leave the nest. It’s the perfect balance between spontaneity and healthy fear.

Puppies are very susceptible to new impressions between 3 and 5 weeks of age. Before the third week puppies are blind, deaf and do not much move around so it’s only after this period that they start to encounter new aspects of the world around them. The senses develop, their muscles develop and their curiosity increases. New things are discovered and examined and slowly but clearly the pup is developing a fundamental image of the world around him. Since pups are usually very relaxed at this age (slow heartbeat) the new experiences are associated with a positive emotion. These are the ingredients to what we call his maintenance set: a set of sensations that are associated with a relaxed mood.

This spontaneous mood slowly vanishes when the puppy reaches the age of 5 weeks. As also the natural relaxed mood is reduced the chances of occurrences of fear and anxiety rise. As of this week every new sensation is held against the image that he has of the world around him. Whether there is a match or a mismatch determines the outcome; a positive or a negative emotion. Known or somewhat familiar sensations are still approached with joy, but the enthusiasm with which unknown sensations are examined decreases. For this reason dog breeders should provide the puppies with a wide set of sensations to fully prepare them for the real world.

The bigger the maintenance set, the more self-assured the puppy will be as he grows up to be an adult dog. Sensations that are outside of his maintenance set can lead to a fear response.
