My 10 month Akita has been well socialized and she still is not comfortable with stranges. We take her to the dog park, and we enrolled her in puppy school after her vaccinations. She barks and hides, won't be coaxed out even for treats! We didn't see it coming since we tried to aviod it immediately. It seems to be every new person who comes close to her. She'll run to people at the park, but doesn't stay long. What can I do to help her?

Hi Janice,

This sounds like an Akita with an attitude problem. I think it's best for you to consult a professional dog trainer that makes house visits. The problem requires attention constantly especially now that there's a baby in the house. Needless to say the dog should never have access to the baby without supervision.

Dog training can certainly help to get rid of this problem. See also Hawk's story at http://www.akita-blog.com/are-akitas-more-aggressive-than-other-dog-breeds/#comment-1516
Though with dog training I don't refer to the typical one hour training on a Sunday morning. Living with a dog is a life style and the rules should be clear to all members of the pack.

I wish you all the best and hope you'll find a good dog trainer.

Hi,

I am new to this site, but had a question on aggression.
My daughter and son-in-law had a 5 yr old male Akita.
He bit my son-in-law once, and my daughter once.
The dog was not attack trained, and was also raised with another dog, a Boxer.
This dog's last attack was 3 yrs ago.
No one could come to the house without the dog going crazy. They always had to put the dog downstairs.
They just brought a new baby to the home 1 month ago.
Without warning, the dog attacked by daughter for the second time, except this time to her breasts. She does breast feed.
Can someone tell me if they have ever heard of anything like this?

Thank you.

Hi Marie-Louise,

Your English is fine, don't worry.
It's not my native language either :-)

I have answered your question in a separate blog post, which you can find here:

http://www.akita-blog.com/leash-problems-and-dominance-issues-with-your-akita/

I wish you all the best with your Akita. Just be patience. A 'no' is a 'no'; ALWAYS (also when you are sick or tired). Very strict rules work best, combined with lots of love.

You can find the information to get you started in the artice and in the recommended free e-books.

Hello Daniel,

Our Akita, born on the 5th of May 2008, nearly 9 months now is becoming very nervous and difficult. (I know, my English isn't perfect my mother tong is Flemish and I'll have to practice my English more).

When we are walking it pretends sniffing and so it can pull at the leash and it has dominance tendency sometimes. Could you give me some piece of advice, please?

Thank you!
